What is it?
CHRPE (Congenital hamartoma of RPE) is a dark spot on the back of your eye in the layer that helps your vision. Usually you’re born with it, or it develops early on in life. By itself, it’s completely harmless and very common—about 1 in 100 people have one. It typically does not cause vision problems and won’t turn into cancer. Certain rare variants may change over time, so it is important to have regular eye exams.
What do I do about it?
No treatment is necessary for this finding. However, monitoring it’s important to observe for any changes over time.
When should I call my eye doctor?
- Blurry or decreased vision
- New flashes of light
- New floaters (spots drifting across your vision)
